Infrastructure Observatory Project Information

Current Project Status

The Infrastructure Observatory is being developed in stages as I learn the technologies and concepts needed to build it. The website and Linux VPS are already running, while the monitoring dashboard is still under development. My goal is to build each part as I gain a better understanding of the tools involved instead of trying to create the entire system before I understand how each part works.

Right now, I know that I want the dashboard to display useful information about the server such as CPU utilization, memory usage, and disk usage. The exact way that information will be collected, processed, and displayed may change as I continue learning and developing the project. Part of the purpose of the Observatory is to give me a place where I can test different approaches and learn from the problems I run into.

Development Plan

The project will continue to grow as I move through the development process. I plan to first build a simple working version of the dashboard and then improve it over time. As I learn more about Linux administration, web development, infrastructure, monitoring, and security, I can apply those skills directly to the Observatory. I also plan to document important changes and explain what I learned while working through each stage of the project.

Because this is a learning project, the design and technical approach may change as I discover better ways to solve problems. I want the final result to show not only a working dashboard, but also the process of learning how to build and maintain something running in a live environment.

Related Resources

These are some of the resources that are useful for learning more about the technologies and concepts connected to this project:

  • Ubuntu Server Documentation — Information about configuring, administering, and maintaining Ubuntu Server.
  • DigitalOcean Documentation — Documentation for managing the VPS and other cloud infrastructure used to host the project.
  • MDN Web Docs — Documentation and learning resources for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and the web technologies used to build the dashboard.
